Day 3 - Altered Tins

Day 3 of our home made Christmas gifts - an altered tin! These are really versatile because you can use them for pretty much anything you like. They can make a cute little gift in their own right (for example as a trinket box) or even a fancy wrapping for a gift inside. For the crafters among you, these can make beautiful storage for your crafty bits and pieces!

It can take a while waiting for the layers of paint and varnish to dry so it's great to do a project like this while also working on something else. The tin below was an empty tin of boiled sweets, primed with a layer of gesso followed by a layer of off-white acrylic paint. I then stamped the bottom half with alcohol inks in red and gold, while the lid was decorated with an image, some acetate, Stickles, glimmer mist, gold acrylic paint, flowers, brads - you name it, it can go on there! I decided that I really wanted to use the Tim Holtz film strip on this tin because it tied in with the movie theme, along with the red and gold ribbon, so mod podged it around the bottom of the tin for a bit of extra glam!

Of course the fun bit is finding something to go inside! In keeping with the Judy Garland theme I made a set of pebble magnets (see here for the tutorial I used) using images from the Wizard of Oz, and thought it would be fun to include a word puzzle as part of the gift (I won't give the answer here because I don't want to spoil the surprise!).

Hope you have fun giving these a go, you will get covered in glue but that's half the fun!
Come back tomorrow for another home-made Christmas gift idea from The Scrappy Tree - remember, don't worry, be scrappy!

How funny!...I just made several of these glass bubbles using pretty papers. I attatched pretty bails to mine and made necklaces out of them. I guess great minds think alike! :)
