Paper Dolls for Us Grown Ups!

Paper Dolls have been around for as long as there has been paper. Young girls would often be given these paper dolls as Christmas gifts and have so much fun changing their clothes and having adventures. As a part of a recent swap with a friend, I realized paper dolls are just as fun now for grown ups, as they must have been for girls of long ago.

To make my paper doll, I used a doll form from the book, Victorian Children Paper Dolls by Evelyn Gathings.

I glued her down on top of a white sheet of cardstock to make her a bit more sturdy. Here she is ready for dressing up:

I'm sure there is an easier way to make her clothes, but I chose to trace around her body and then just wing it and draw the dresses shape! Once drawn (making sure to add flaps so the dress can stay on the doll), I cut out and began to embellish.

Here is my doll in her first dress:

I attached vintage lace pieces, a vintage flower and bias tape on the dress shape I had cut out using my Webster's Pages paper. *Tip: You may want to cut two identical pieces of patterned paper or provide a study backing for all the embellishments. I added heavy things to it and I found I needed an extra layer on my dress.*

For the second dress, I wanted to make it a bit festive for this time of year.
I used my Webster's Pages paper, vintage sheet music, vintage lace and KaiserKraft pearls to complete this dress.

I had so much fun playing with my doll and I can't wait to make another!

Julz, these turned out so cute! I love both but the festive one is my fav, what a fun swap! My Mom adored paper dolls and would often get me to play with them, I think it was more for her after reading your post :)

I spent many happy hours as a child playing with paper dolls - and I think yours would be just as much fun (if not more!!).

I loved playing paper doll dress up as a child too. Your two outfits are so lovely and textural with the fabrics used.
